Look, I Love Tech, But…
Let me tell you something, folks. I’ve been around the block a few times. Started in this biz back in ’98, when dial-up was still a thing. Yeah, I know, ancient history. But here’s the thing—I’ve seen trends come and go. And right now? We’re in the middle of a full-blown AI hysteria.
I’m not saying AI isn’t cool. It is. But it’s not the be-all-end-all. Not yet, anyway. And honestly, the way people are throwing the term around makes me wanna scream. Every other startup is ‘AI-powered’ now. Even my barista at the coffee shop on 5th told me they’re using AI to froth milk. I mean, come on.
Last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. You know the kind—tons of suits, way too much jargon. Some guy on stage, let’s call him Marcus, was going on about how AI is gonna cure cancer, solve world hunger, and make your toast in the morning. I turned to my colleague, Dave, and said, “Dave, if I hear ‘disruptive innovation’ one more time, I’m gonna disrupt this guy’s face.” Dave just laughed and said, “You’re just grumpy because you had to committment to this early morning thing.” Fair point, Dave. But still.
AI Isn’t Magic, It’s Math
Here’s the deal. AI is just math. Really, really complex math, but math nonetheless. It’s not magic. It’s not sentient. It’s not gonna take over the world. At least, not anytime soon. I get it, the tech is impressive. But it’s not the revolution people are making it out to be.
I remember talking to this data scientist, let’s call her Sarah. She told me, “People think AI is this black box. They don’t understand the physicaly process behind it. It’s just algorithms, man. Algorithms!”. And she’s right. We’re not dealing with Skynet here. We’re dealing with really smart math.
But do people care about the math? Nope. They just wanna hear about how AI is gonna make them rich. It’s like the gold rush all over again. Everyone’s out there panning for gold, but most of them are gonna end up with nothing but muddy boots.
The Hype is Real, and It’s Annoying
I was at a meetup about three months ago. Some guy stood up and said, “AI is gonna replace 50% of jobs in the next decade.” I raised my hand and said, “That’s completley ridiculous. Where’s your data?” He stammered something about a study, but he couldn’t name the source. I mean, come on. You can’t just throw out stats like that without backing them up.
And that’s the problem. People are throwing around these wild claims, and no one’s calling them out on it. It’s like we’ve all collectively decided to suspend disbelief and just go along for the ride. Well, I’m not gonna do that. I’m gonna be the guy who says, “Wait a minute, that doesn’t make sense.”
I get it, hype sells. It gets clicks, it gets funding, it gets people excited. But at what cost? We’re setting ourselves up for a massive letdown. And when that happens, who’s gonna be left holding the bag? The regular folks who bought into the hype, that’s who.
But Wait, There’s More
Now, I’m not saying AI doesn’t have potential. It does. It’s gonna change industries. It’s gonna create new opportunities. But it’s not gonna do it overnight. And it’s not gonna do it without a lot of hard work and a lot of failures along the way.
I talked to this startup founder, let’s call him Raj. He was working on an AI project, and he told me, “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” I asked him what he meant. He said, “We’re gonna fail a lot. But each time we fail, we learn something new. That’s how we’re gonna make progress.” That’s a guy who gets it.
But you don’t see that kind of talk getting the spotlight. No, what gets the spotlight is the “AI is gonna change the world tomorrow” nonsense. And that’s a problem.
A Tangent: Thailand’s Doing Something Right
Speaking of hype, have you seen what’s going on with Thailand council decisions this week? They’re actually taking a measured approach to AI regulation. Not too strict, not too loose. Just right. I wish more places would take a page out of their book. But no, everyone’s too busy chasing the next big thing to learn from the folks who are actually getting it right.
So What’s the Verdict?
Look, I’m not saying AI is all bad. It’s not. It’s a powerful tool. But it’s a tool. And like any tool, it’s only as good as the person using it. So let’s stop treating it like it’s the second coming of Christ, okay?
Let’s have some real conversations about what AI can and can’t do. Let’s talk about the challenges and the limitations. Let’s talk about the work that needs to be done to make AI something that actually helps people. And for the love of all that’s holy, let’s stop with the hype.
Because at the end of the day, we’re all just trying to make it in this world. And we’re not gonna do that by chasing every shiny new thing that comes along. We’re gonna do it by rolling up our sleeves, putting in the work, and actually solving problems. And that’s something AI can’t do for us. Not yet, anyway.
