Skate Story Review: The Ultimate Skateboarding Game Experience
I had the chance to experience Skate Story at Summer Game Fest, and it was truly a unique and immersive skateboarding game. Created by Sam Eng, the game aims to capture the feeling of invincibility and vulnerability that comes with skateboarding. As you play as the glass skater in the Underworld, your goal is to skate to the moon, eat it, and escape hell. The game features surreal playgrounds with various obstacles and enemies, such as the Devil and his minions.
Playing the demo with a standard Xbox controller, I found the controls to be intuitive and responsive. You can hop on the board, gain speed, powerslide, ollie, and perform tricks with different button combinations. The gameplay mechanics allowed me to explore the Underworld, interact with stone heads, collect items, solve puzzles, and engage in a boss fight against a giant stone philosopher’s head.
Despite crashing multiple times during the 45-minute demo, the game’s quick resets and forgiving mechanics made it easy to get back on track. The constant need for situational awareness and the risk-reward nature of performing tricks added to the thrill of skateboarding in Skate Story. The game’s mechanical rhythm, VHS-filtered visuals, and atmospheric soundtrack by Blood Cultures created a mesmerizing and immersive experience.
With over 70 tricks to learn, customizable gear, and a leveling system, Skate Story promises hours of engaging gameplay. It’s set to release this year on Steam, developed by Sam Eng and published by Devolver Digital. Overall, Skate Story offers a compelling and addictive skateboarding experience that will keep players immersed in its unique world.
